Kootenay EcoRetreat Centre   Slocan BC  Canada

The beautiful Kootenay EcoRetreat Centre (aka White Pines Dojo) is an off-grid retreat centre located just outside of Slocan City, BC.  Built by Roland Werner the two storey building is post and beam straw-bale construction measuring 40 ft. by 60 ft. (2400 square ft.).

The activity space is a 1600 square-foot straw bale room with 78 traditional Japanese tatami. The largeness of the room and its earthen walls create a tranquil and clear place to study one’s art. The full facility includes two change rooms, two showers, three washrooms and upstairs accommodations for up to 16 guests.

The facility’s primary power source is solar power. Other features of the dojo include propane on-demand water heater, wood cook stove and outdoor passive solar shower. Year-round fresh water is provided by the spring fed creek on the property.  The practice space is warmed by in-floor heating during the winter months.

Nestled on forty acres of gently sloping land of young forests and extensive wild flower meadow just outside of Slocan City there is full sun exposure and 360 degrees of breathtaking vistas, including the Valhalla Mountain range.  Wildlife sightings are common even right from the Dojo dining room. There is no cell phone service in the Slocan area.  www.whitepinesdojo.com
